Chapter 7

“We need to talk,” Richard hissed at me through clenched teeth.

“I’ve said all I had to say in my message,” I hissed back.

“Fine, then you can listen while I speak.”

I didn’t want to hear anything he had to say and not because I thought he’d lie to me, but because I feared he wouldn’t. I couldn’t stand the thought of him telling me how he’d met her and how they’d fallen in love. I didn’t want him to say he’d tried to resist her, but there’d been no use, he was powerless when she was around. My heart was broken enough, it couldn’t take anymore.

“There’s no point in talking, we aren’t right for each other and we both know it,” I said matter-of-factly. “And don’t feel bad, you weren’t the only one cheating. I’ve fallen in love with someone else.”

It was a total lie, but I wanted him to feel as unwanted as I did. From the look on his face, I’d succeeded.

“Is that the truth?” he asked, his voice quiet and suddenly void of any anger.

No, not at all. I love you more than life itself, but I want to break your heart like you did mine.

“I’m sorry, but it is,” I replied. “I was angry when I left that message, but now I realize I’m better off with Jeremy.”

I could see the pain in his face at the mention of another man’s name. I was slowly beginning to feel redeemed.

“Damn you anyways,” he said in the same quiet voice. He turned and slowly walked to his car, not bothering to look back.

He had a lot of nerve acting hurt when he’d been the one cheating and buying someone else expensive gifts from Tiffany’s, while I sat around waiting for him to show up for dates.

I walked into our apartment and found Lisa stepping away from an opened window.

“I guess you heard all of that,” I said.

“I did and I’m totally confused. Who’s Jeremy?”

I explained my lies and told her I was going to bed. I was exhausted and wanted this day to end as soon as possible.

“You sure you don’t want me to stay home?”

“No, I’m fine. He’s not the first guy to break my heart and he probably won’t be the last.”

I wished her well with Brian and headed to my room. I put on sweats and climbed into bed. Within minutes, I was fast asleep. All night long, I dreamed about Richard and his new girlfriend. I woke up the next morning feeling worse than I had the night before.

Since I’d skipped dinner last night, my stomach was growling for a substantial breakfast. I headed to the kitchen to have several helpings of whatever Lisa had cooked. The kitchen looked untouched and Lisa was nowhere in sight.

I peeked in her room and as I suspected, her bed hadn’t been slept in. She’d never come home last night, which meant one of two things. Either Brian was a psycho murderer and my dead roommate’s body was lying in a ditch somewhere, or she’d decided he deserved more than just a kiss.
